The .45 ACP (Automatic Colt Pistol), or .45 Auto is a semi automatic handgun cartridge designed by John Browning in 1905. The .45 ACP is also chambered for use in some revolvers with the use of a moon clip. Ruger makes a 45 Colt/45 ACP revolver still. While th cartridge was designed by John Browning for Colt and its use in the 1911 Handgun, the most influential person in selecting the cartridge was a US Army Ordnance Officer, Gen. John T. Thompson. General Thompson insisted on the adoption of a"man stopper" pistol. This insistence was the result of the poor showing of the Army's .38 Long Colt pistols used during the Philippine-American War (1899-1902). The performance of the .38 Long Colt pistol was so poor that they were unable to stop the drug crazed Moro warriors. This resulted in the US Army reissuing Colt 1873 pistols in 45 Colt resulting in an immediate elimination of the problem.
The SAAMI pressure limit for the .45 ACP is set at 21,000 psi. Accordingly the.45 ACP cartridge has relatively low muzzle blast and flash. The .45 ACP produces heavy recoil in handguns but is controllable with proper training. The standard issue military .45 ACP round has a 230 grain bullet that travels at approximately 830 feet per second when fired from a government issue M1911A1.
