The .45 Colt, sometimes called the .45 Long Colt to distinguish it from the short .45 S&W Schofield, as well as the .45 ACP. The .45 Colt is the oldest service cartridge still in use today. Introduced in 1873 for the Colt Single Action Army (SAA) revolver, the Peacemaker, the .45 Colt and the SAA revolver are legends in their own time, and the most popular handgun/cartridge combination on the Western frontier. The 45 Colt by Bishop Ammunition Manufacturing, LLC., are loaded with a 250 grain lead bullet and a muzzle velocity of 860 fps.

The .45 Colt is a typical, straight wall, rimmed revolver cartridge. The rim diameter is .512", the base diameter is .480", and its neck diameter is .476". The case length is 1.29" and the overall cartridge length is 1.6" maximum. The .45 Colt uses .454" diameter bullets and standard large pistol primers. The SAAMI maximum average pressure is 14,000 psi.

The .45 Colt Cowboy Ammunition is loaded by Bishop Ammunition Manufacturing, LLC., to black powder pressure loadings. This ammunition is safe to use in ALL 45 Colt firearms in good condition. The 45 Colt Cowboy Ammunition uses a 250 Grain hard cast lead bullet. Our ammunition is loaded to 710 fps, and powder charges are kept to 1/10th of a grain. This ammunition is intended for Cowboy Action Shooting as well as everyday use in older handguns and rifles.

The .45 Colt, mistakenly referred to as the 45 Long Colt, is a handgun cartridge having its origins back to 1872. This cartridge was adopted by the U.S. Army in 1873 and served as an official US military handgun cartridge for 14 years. The .45 Colt remains popular with renewed interest in Cowboy Action Shooting. This grandfather of metallic handgun cartridges has seen resurgence as a cartridge in handgun hunting and Metallic Silhouette Shooting competitions. The 45 Colt is popular in Cowboy Action Shooting competitions as well. The .45 Colt originally was a black-powder cartridge, but modern loadings use smokeless powder. Because of the cartridge's power and its excellent accuracy, the .45 Colt was the most-used cartridge at the time of its introduction even succeeding the .44 WCF (or the .44-40 Winchester).
