5 of 5 Good Enough To Ride With November 15, 2011
Reviewer: Bob Campbell from Moore, SC
Recently there has been an ammunition shortage in America. During this time a number of companies have risen to fill the need for commercial ammunition. It is similar to the situation that existed during the Vietnam War. With good guns in short supply companies such as Charter Arms and the Interarms sold alternates to Smith and Wesson and Colt. By the same token, today foreign companies have offered alternates to our own Federal and Winchester. Some of this ammunition is OK and some should be ground up into fertilizer. It isn’t just the foreign concerns as American makers are not always across the board with quality. It is very much buyer beware. My own philosophy and one that has worked for me is to use the least expensive possible practice ammunition and load the best- which is not always the most expensive- for serious use. Recently I have tested a new name on the market with excellent results.

The beginning of the story is the Ruger Montado. Montado means mounted cowboy. The new Ruger is a very special handgun with a 3 7/8 inch barrel, special small grip frame and a special hammer designed for speed cocking. Just a few months ago this type of handgun was a very expensive proposition. Today we are able to own this custom grade shooter for a lot less than the price of a similar custom handgun. The Ruger came out of the box shooting with excellent results. To date I have fired 150 rounds of .45 Colt ammunition from Bishop Ammunition with good results. This company has risen to the fore to provide good quality ammunition in several calibers. I chose the .45 Colt to evaluate because, frankly, this one is difficult to get right. Cowboy action shooters like a load that generates perhaps 700 fps with the 250 grain bullet. Achieving a full powder burn without blow by isn’t always easy. Accuracy is good if done correctly, casual if not done correctly. My first five rounds of Bishop .45 Colt in the custom Vaquero/Montado showed an SD- or deviation between shots- of less than ten fps. That is quality control and knowing what I know about the .45 Colt and its loading quirks, impressive. Accuracy was good enough for any reasonable task, with the first five shot group marking 3 ½ inches at 25 yards. Later testing with the 4 ¾ inch barrel USFA Rodeo told a slightly different story. While I appreciate my Montado the Rodeo features a longer barrel and increased sight radius and has proven superbly accurate. This revolver produced a 1 9/10 inch group at a long 75 feet. The Bishop ammunition is good enough to ride with. The results with the Rodeo in particular were very good. Powder burn was clean. Average velocity was about 670 fps in the Ruger and just over 700 fps with the Rodeo.

I carried the Montado in a well crafted crossdraw holster from John Bianchi’s Frontier Gunleather. The holster sets at precisely the correct angle for a good sharp draw. A small retaining strap is ideal for keeping the piece seated until you need to draw. Overall, this is a first class holster well suited to mounted use. My own needs are more pedestrian but the Bianchi holster is a holster that sees much use in the field and even under a jacket for concealed carry. This is good gear from one of the legends in the field.

I enjoy firing and using my single action revolvers very much. The addition of another source of ammunition for the .45 Colt is a boon to all shooters. During the previous ammunition shortage much was made of a shortage of .380 ACP and .38 Special but the .45 Colt was practically unobtainable in any quantity at any price. Bishop Ammunition offers good ammunition at a fair price.
